Few treatment options outside of palliative care exist by this point. The presence of inoperable tumors and malignancy in the body’s tissues make patient comfort the primary goal of treatment.
The presence of mesothelioma in many organs and tissues is the signature of Brigham Stage IV mesothelioma. Tumor masses have spread everywhere by means of malignant cells carried through the bloodstream, including across the blood-brain barrier; the brain, skeleton, and internal organs are all susceptible to metastasis, and damage to internal organs due to large tumor growth is occurring.
Prognosis for patients with Brigham Stage IV mesothelioma is terminal. Palliation (care devoted to preserving patient comfort and quality of life) is the only desirable therapy at this stage.
