Pipefitters play an essential role in the construction industry, installing, maintaining, and repairing the networks of pipe and duct systems necessary in modern buildings. However, until recently, architects and designers commonly specified asbestos as an insulating material in these systems: asbestos-based tapes, blankets, paint, and other materials were all widely used in the building trades until the late 1970s. And, unfortunately, asbestos fibers from these materials were inhaled by pipefitters along the way. Today, asbestos in banned as a building material – but the damage is done. Asbestos is by far the most common cause of mesothelioma, and research shows that the incidence of mesolthelioma in pipefitters is much higher than in the general public. Likewise, the rate of mesothelioma in steamfitters is equally high.
And the danger continues. Pipefitters today are often called upon to work in buildings constructed before the 1970s, and in many of these legacy asbestos remains – resulting in an increased risk of developing mesothelioma if precautions are not observed.
If you are a pipefitter with mesothelioma, or if you have other health problems due to asbestos exposure, you may have a case at law entitling you to compensation from the parties responsible. The courts have previously found in favor of pipefitters or steamfitters with mesothelioma in numerous cases.
