Mental/Psychological Abuse

Threats, verbal or nonverbal insults, intimidation, isolation, and humiliation are all forms of mental and psychological nursing home abuse. Though mental nursing home abuse may not be as obvious as other forms of abuse, mental and psychological abuse can cause extreme mental anguish resulting in emotional, mental, and physical symptoms and manifestations.

Changes in mood and demeanor, isolation imposed by nursing home staff, sudden memory loss or periods of forgetfulness, or any other marked change in the nursing home patient may be indicators of mental abuse and psychological abuse in the nursing home setting. Becoming overly anxious, irritable, or frightened are also red flags to watch out for, possibly indicating that the resident is experiencing some form of mental or psychological trauma. All such signs and symptoms merit investigation on behalf of your loved one.

Friends, family, and nursing home visitors should watch for any signs or symptoms of mental abuse and psychological abuse, bearing in mind that the nursing home patient is often too intimidated, or unable, to report the abuse themselves.
