Aprotinin, manufactured and sold by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation as Trasylol, is an injectable prescription drug which is used to prevent bleeding during many invasive procedures. It was approved by the FDA in 1993. Tragically, Trasylol was unsafe – and the manufacturer knew it. The risks posed by the drug were revealed by a retrospective study of aprotinin Bayer itself had commissioned not long after bringing it to market.
The drug increased the patient’s risk of acute renal failure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, stroke and encephalopathy. Meanwhile sales of the drug skyrocketed, even as deaths attributable to Trasylol began to increase.
In 2006 the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against the use of aprotinin. Bayer then revealed additional studies showing the links between Trasylol and increased risk of serious kidney damage, congestive heart failure and strokes. In late 2007, Bayer withdrew aprotinin completely.
If you or a loved one have undergone heart surgery and subsequently developed kidney or renal failure, you may be a victim of Trasylol.
You owe it to yourself to contact a Trasylol attorney and consider a Trasylol lawsuit. Your Trasylol lawyer can take your case into court and get you the compensation you deserve.
