A new study from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that women who used chemical hair straighteners had more than double the risk of uterine cancer.

Predatory marketing

Plaintiffs argue that major cosmetic manufacturers (including L’Oréal and Revlon) knew about harmful ingredients—like phthalates and parabens—but failed to warn the public. And they were marketed as being safe and gentle.

Women at risk

Women who used hair straighteners are at risk, with Black women in greater danger than those of other demographics. The NIH found that about 60% of its study respondents that used hair straighteners were Black women.

This has rapidly become one of the largest active mass torts in the United States, with over 16,059 pending lawsuits consolidated into a federal Multidistrict Litigation (MDL-3060) in the Northern District of Illinois under Judge Mary Rowland.
